The collaboration between Toyota and Subaru on a rear-drive sports coupe is getting past the rumor stage. The latest comes from Australia's Wheels magazine, who says it has confirmed from inside sources that the vehicle is in development, and that Subaru Australia wants no part of it.
As had been previously reported, the car would be fitted with a 2.0-liter boxer engines, but Wheels says they will be normally aspirated. In addition, the report indicates two versions will be built, with Subaru and Toyota skins, and that the vehicle is said to take its design cues from the Subaru B11-S concept, which first appeared at the 2003 Geneva auto show.
Subaru Australia is cold to the idea of the vehicle for a couple of reasons. First, it's a small, rear-drive coupe, which officials think won't work in general in the Australian market, especially given Subaru's all-wheel-drive focus. In addition, the execs don't like the idea of a rebadged Subaru and fought successfully against bringing previous GM-led efforts to bring vehicles, including a reskinned Forester, to Australia as a Holden.
